Remnants that are left over from things that are gone

CCCleaner Hack spells danger for Windows 10 users

I had downloaded and installed the infected version of CCCleaner onto a Lenovo Laptop and wanted to remove it and clean up the system.

The laptop had a free version of Bit Defender AV installed so I updated the signature files and did a full system scan.  It found nothing – about as useful as tit’s on a bull – but you get what you pay for I guess.

So I turned to my trusty Malwarebytes Anti-Rookit. Updated the signature files and ran a scan. It found the CCCleaner malware that had been installed no problem at all, plus the downloaded CCCleaner executable containing the infection. Malwarebytes are a class act in finding infections on a PC.

i’ll throw some coins in the air and the shortest straw loses!

We have to move to the other side of the pendulum.

God must be pretty angry with the USA about it’s carbon pollution.

First of all he unleashes storm and tempest on the centre of fossil fuel in Houston, and now, just in case the dummies in the Climate Denier community don’t get it, he sends along Irma, Jose and Katie.

Now Trump and his fossil boosting cronies can bleat all they like about fake science, Chinese conspiracies and natural variations. But to the everyday person, these weather events seem suspiciously like what the climate scientists predicted would be the outcome of increased CO2 levels in the atmosphere.

The cost of damage to Texas and Florida is going to run to a pretty penny, and the global Insurance industry is repricing risk in these torrid times. It will drive the hard heads in Government and Industry to reconsider the true costs of remaining active in fossil fuel industry. You can build a fucking lot of Renewable Energy plants with the billions it will cost to repair the damage to these states.

When Murphy’s Law cuts in, it operates with a full head of steam.

Teresa’s going to be the sacrificial martyr

Yet another example of poor governance in UK leads to tragedy.

What is it with Westminster politicians, civil servants, and local government officials that they have such a propensity for monumental cock-up’s like the Grenfell Tower disaster.

And already the buck passing has begun. Evidence of repeated and ignored warnings from Fire Authorities and Construction Material Standards Authorities to Government Ministers. How culpable are these people, and will they ever be bought to account, and pay a price for their failures ?

The mighty market has failed. A fetish for efficiency of service provision perversely leads to ineffective processes, inadequate responses, and loss of human life. Fragmented agencies trying to co-ordinate an emergency rescue with lack of equipment and personnel.

At some point the karma has to turn.

We’ve come to the crunch war and we don’t want to sit on the box

Pathetic PM shows his gross ineptitude and thin skin

Poor PM Trumball. Surrounded by a rampaging tribe of Labor injuns, greedy ranchers who want all the land for themselves, and with disharmony among the settler folk he is leading to the promised land, he draws his wagons ever tighter in a defensive circle and issues a rallying cry.

Them injuns he says, will never be as good as us settler folk.  They live in tepees with barely any room inside, and they don’t go places like our wagons. Why, we can move our wagons to any harbourside or bay with a decent view and land to exploit.

But the injuns can’t.  They are stuck in their tepees, jealously wishing they could move their village to a harbourside, clear the land, and get their hands on some of the best settler firewater.

Their leader, Billonimo, has even been seen sitting on a box at the table of settler gatherings, enjoying the venison and finest firewater. What a sycophant, this lowly injun chief. How dare he aspire to be like settlers, and own a covered wagon.

But the injuns know that their time is coming, and soon the settler wagons will be torched with flaming arrows, and the firewater will be theirs.

They all have their noses in the pie, dancing to the same tune

Parliamentary expenses rorts go too far for the public’s appetite

It’s not enough to create another oversight body to administer MP’s expenses. That’s a good idea within its boundaries. The public are now baying for MP’s blood, particularly in view of the Centrelink extortion racket run by the LNP.

Picking on the most vulnerable in society while simultaneously living the high life on our expense card makes us want to vomit at the rank hypocrisy of the LNP.

The voters want a Federal ICAC. Support is at 83% according to an opinion poll, and the same poll found that huge majority also thought that politicians were corrupt and needed the same kind of ruthless oversight that, ironically, Centrelink recipients receive.

Let’s hope that the minor parties, the media, and the pressure from public opinion can force the hand of both LNP and Labour and create this long needed body, with decent coercive powers, open hearings (if you’ve nothing to hide then you have nothing to fear) and a significant budget allocation.

We wait with interest to observe the obfuscation tactics of the major parties to a Federal ICAC.

We’re being tarred with somebody else’s brush

The boys who play sports are victims of the machine

Apparently guys in their 20’s don’t go out at night, and drink too much, and conduct themselves poorly, anymore judging by the recent media beat-up of an incident.

Once sport was carried out for the enjoyment of competition and the personal satisfaction of the athlete.  Then televised sport turned the whole concept around.  Sport is now primarily a big business that provides sporting competitions as its product, not a personal pursuit.

Sporting people who transgress the interests of the business are subjected to media derision as it is the media who are the primary consumer of the sporting products

The sportspeople end up being tarred with somebody else’s brush – the media brush.

Manger, Quality Control

Abbott seeks re-election

You have to laugh at all the cheer squad urging Tony to stand for parliament again.  Talk about self interest.  These deluded souls still think that the far-right faithers of the LNP will be handed government again.  Over the dead bodies of the voters for sure.

But what’s a few thousand dead bodies to ensure the extremists in the LNP regain the levers of state and impose a clerico-totalitarian order on society.  They’ve stacked institutions with their sympathisers, including a back to the future appointment of a military man as Governor-General, and created the Nazi like black-shirted Border Farce.  That makes organising any takeover coup far easier for them. Once they’ve rolled a re-elected Turnbull they can start the dirty tricks campaign again to create fear and loathing in the community. And when it comes to fear, loathing and hate none do it better than the faithers.

Turnbull and the moderates in the LNP will need to fight a constant war to ensure the influence of the religious extremists is curtailed, as they don’t represent the public, but rather a group of narrow minded bigot’s intoxicated on their “big guy in the sky cool-aid”. A study of brains of faithers showed their brains were malformed in the areas used for critical reasoning.

The Abbott clique had their chance, and the voters were appalled.  Nothing but flags and national security announcements – just doing the bidding of the oxygen thieves like Rupert Corp and the Trumpster wing of the Republican party.  Sing from the god-botherers book on Sundays, and drink the Tea Party brew the rest of the week.

And what do they have to show for their time in power.  Nothing other than a big fuck-up, too busy carrying on their religious crusade against Islam to focus on anything else like the economy stupid.

Meanwhile the Manger^, Quality Control for all matters religious heads to the US to address an extremist organisation whose stated goal is to return society to the simple times of the 4th and 5th Centuries by destroying science and medicine.  This man was once our PM – how did that happen.  The people were brainwashed by the media and vested interest groups into supporting him. Turnbull is our only buttress against the dangerous faither extremists. Beware Australia.

^ Intentional misspelling to show lack of critical attention by the monkey pod crew and their acolytes.

A picture tells a thousand words

In today’s social media a picture does more than that

They used to say that a picture saves a thousand words, but with social media a picture is usually accompanied by a thousand words of explanation and comment. Only Twitter forces brevity, which is maybe why it isn’t as popular.

Given the keenness of large parts of society to document their every move, every social encounter, every new purchase, every new love there will be a treasure trove of data for future historians.  They will probably reconstruct today’s world using VR technology and all the Facebook and Google data.

Maybe one day an entrepreneur will sell fully immersive experiences of living like a group of friends in the 21st century, all from gleaned data.  And I bet that Google and Facebook will own the copyright on deceased persons data and use it to profit in scenarios like immersive VR.

Each VR frame will be a thousand words, and there will be thousands of frames per minute to flood the future human’s senses.  Then a picture will tell a thousand words.

I think there’s a can of worms brewing here

A difficult trade off between freedom and privacy

Many see the rise of the total surveillance state as inevitable.  The technology is at hand, and those that claim the need for ever greater ability to intrude into the private lives of the citizens are succeeding in panicing gormless politicians into allowing ever more scope.

While those that deploy these awesome capabilities do so to protect democracy and freedom to pursue life liberty and happiness then all is OK.  But what happens when people committed to radical political, social or religious ideology are able to infiltrate sovereign bodies and turn the state to the dark side.

Most people are happy to trade off some individual rights and freedom for the common good, and to prevent the rise of anarchy and the collapse of civil society.  Those with the most to lose are holders of the various property rights and entitlements, the cornerstone of the capitalist system.  Thus the wealthy, powerful elite have an enormous vested interest in the status quo.  They don’t care much for individual freedoms and privacy except when it impacts on their self-interest.

History shows that voters in a democracy will turn to extremist political parties in times of social strife due to economic collapse or rapid change to a new order deemed unfair by the majority.

The white man with 5 eyes will eventually turn dark and evil to save his interests from the geopolitical can of worms that is now brewing.

BAUHN Solid State PC

It was on special for $199 so how could I resist

I saw this tiny unit in the display case at an ALDI supermarket in Sydney Australia.  Bauhn is one of the brand names used by ALDI for electronic goods sold in their supermarket.

The box was barely larger than the included wireless keyboard and mouse. It said quad-core CPU, 2Gb memory, 32Gb solid state storage, WiFi, Ethernet, HDMI, plus micro-SD card slot and 3x USB ports. Licensed for Windows 8.1.

Inside the box was the keyboard, mouse, power plug-pack (18W, 5V @ 3A) and the PC unit itself which is in a tiny black plastic case which weighs surprising little. Batteries were supplied for both the mouse and keyboard.  The USB wireless dongle is housed inside the mouse and occupies one of the USB ports in normal operation. Also included were an HDMI cable, and an adapter for the single micro-USB port. Everything you need to get up and going – I like teutonic practicality.

It was pretty easy to get up and running. Fit the batteries to the keyboard and mouse.  Put wireless dongle in one of the USB ports. Plug in HDMI, network cable, and power supply.  Hold the power button for 2 secs until the light comes on. It booted no worries, everything worked out of the box.  It prompted me immediately after the user account setup to upgrade to Windows 10 which I did.  That took a few hours to download and install so I left it overnight.  In the morning I finished off the install.

This is a fantastic little unit for light PC and Internet work.  It runs an Atom CPU and has no fan. The case gets mildly warm during use, about the same temperature as a WiFi router or modem.  It boots up Windows 10 very quickly due to the solid state storage, far faster than a laptop running a HDD. I’ve augmented storage by fitting a 32Gb Class 10 micro-SD card and set Windows 10 to use it as the user data store for audio, video, pictures etc.

If you happen to be in an ALDI store, have a look in the display case.  If you see one of these for $199 or less, just buy it.  Someone in your family will be able to use it, as long as they aren’t a gamer.
